Today is my last day as a professionally employed human. I am writing this blog post from my office computer, and after it is published, I will turn the computer off for the last time and walk out the door and into the next chapter of my life. It’s a journey I’ve been planning for a while. I’m not sure where it will lead, and I can’t wait.

I decided to blog in this chapter of life for two reasons: First, to incentivize myself to spend time reflecting on what I’m experiencing, reading, and talking about [writing is thinking] and provide some documentation of the same for posterity. Second, to share some of my thoughts and experiences with all of you. Fair warning, I’m not planning to have much of a censor or filter here and it likely will get pretty personal and opinionated. Hope that’s cool.

To prepare for this journey, I’ve been thinking a lot about a life purpose. I read a while back about a process I really liked of making your life purpose concrete by writing many versions and iterating until it felt just right, in a concise, bullet-point style. It resonated with me a lot, so I decided to try it. Here’s what I came up with:

I want to:

  • Be a reliable man that those around me are glad to depend on
  • Share amazing, unique and beautiful experiences with people I care deeply about
  • Make concrete, positive impact on the world that is of appropriate scale for the talents and opportunities I’ve been given
